The Difficulty of Running a Business That Can’t Fail

Running a Tai Chi school, or any other school in the wellness space is different from any other type of business. Given the access to technology and the internet you may now have multiple income streams but when you first start out as a teacher in person it has a unique characteristic that is simultaneously a strength and a big challenge.

You may be teaching out of a hired hall, your own home or your client’s home. We started teaching in the park at the mercy of the weather. This meant that our only outgoing was insurance, every few years a first aid refresher and some home made flyers, resulting in outgoings of less than £20 a month. So to break even wasn’t an insurmountable task, far from it. In fact if you were motivated to teach just for the love of it then it is a pocket money amount that you could pay out of your personal funds. So the business failing in the way that a start-up with high overheads might isn’t going to happen. But that leaves two challenges to overcome; firstly there can be a motivational gap in that it would tick along nicely making a small amount of money but not growing. And secondly, even if you are making every effort, it is a tough business, as are many other sectors no doubt so we don’t have the monopoly on this. Where that can leave you is with a permanent side hustle that never folds but never migrates to full time, leaving you in the catch 22 of wanting to grow but having limited time to commit to achieving this.

However it is possible, and when you get to the the peak of the mountain, or at least the higher passes, the view is spectacular.
